Ethically Handcrafted in Scotland
Responsible production is at the heart of Oscha, we love our planet and want to keep it beautiful for generations to come. This is why we only use responsibly sourced and organic yarns, and why our beautiful baby carriers are woven in the UK and handcrafted in Scotland.
Woven with Love,
Crafted with Care,
Powered by Sunshine
Our wee Scottish workshop runs on 100% solar power meaning your carrier has a little sunshine stitched into the seams.
We actually generate about 54% more electricity than we use through our solar panels. So after powering our sewing machines and computers,
and after everyone has had their cups of tea we give our extra energy back to the national grid to help keep other homes and businesses running.
Did you know we are a Carbon Neutral business?
Just by using solar panels, last year we stopped about 1700kg of carbon entering the atmosphere.
However, we wanted to go one step further and we have worked with Trees for Life to calculate and donate the number of trees needed to offset our carbon emissions for the year.
Responsibly Sourced & Organic Yarns
We care about people …
that is why we are passionate about using
Organic is at the core of Oscha. Organic crops not only contribute to better and healthier working conditions for farmers, but also produce stronger yarns which are gentle on delicate skin. Studies have also shown that organic farming uses less water and is more sustainable than simply using harsh chemicals to increase yields.
Using an organic fabric means your baby carrier has been ethically crafted with love and care from seed to sling. Shop our 100% organic slings.
Responsible yarn sourcing means that we hold all of our yarns suppliers to our own high standards. This means only using mulesing free wools and viscose fibers produced using a closed loop system, such as Tencel, making use of sustainable crops such as linen and hemp and ensuring production stays in the UK where possible.
Ethically Made in Scotland
Our production happens entirely in the UK, with our fabrics woven and finished in England and then carefully stitched in Scotland.
Our wee, solar powered Scottish workshop is always a hive of activity, with our skilled seamstresses and eagle-eyed checkers carefully crafting your baby slings. Paying over the Real Living Wage to our staff, regardless of age, is an important part of ethical and responsible production for us here at Oscha.
Your new sling will be made with love and care, before it is packed in an organic cotton tote and a recyclable postbag and sent out to start its adventures with you and your family.
Zero Waste Product
Our baby carriers produce zero waste
and this is something we are really proud of!
It all starts at the mill where extra lengths of yarn are often added onto the looms, some companies will not use this, meaning the material is disposed of. At Oscha we always use this extra yarn even if it means we have a little more fabric than we anticipated.
When we are sewing your slings we sometimes notice tiny flaws in the fabric, in some businesses this fabric would be thrown away, however, we stitch it up and sell our Woven Seconds at a discount. This is great for you all as customers, but also means nothing is wasted.
What about our scrap fabric? Well, we bag this up in 1kg parcels and sell it on our website! Our customers craft everything from teddies to quilts from these scraps, and we love to see their creations which they often share on Clan Oscha.
Anything that is too small to be useful is taken to a textile recycling centre where it is repurposed into recycled yarns.
Oscha Slings = Zero Waste
Restoring the Scottish Highlands
Your purchase helps us plant a tree!
A contribution from the sale of each carrier will go towards growing our own Oscha Grove in the Caledonian Forest thanks to our collaboration with a local charity, Trees for Life. You can see our current count of trees planted in the banner above.
We are passionate about babywearing and the environment, by bringing those two passions together in our responsibly-made products we hope to make the world a better place for future generations.
Trees for Life is doing amazing work replanting and restoring the ancient Caledonian forest and we are proud to be supporting this return to nature and the effect it will have on our landscape and atmosphere. It’s really important for us to be pro-actively involved in sustaining Scotland’s forests and encouraging new growth in barren areas. We love our environment – it’s beautiful and inspiring, and we want it to stay that way.
