"What are the best slings for the heat?" - This is a question we are often asked
as the weather warms up, so here's a guide to help you choose the right Oscha Sling
for you & your little one this summer.
Choosing a carrier
Baby wraps and ring slings are popular choices for summertime carrying as they offer complete adjustability,
allowing you and your little one to be comfortable together in the heat.
Our Cairis Carrier is also a good option for summer carrying as the unique,
lightweight design allows for natural airflow and all the comfort for a traditional woven sling.
The versatility of baby wraps really makes them a winner for the summer carrying
- with a wide variety of carries possible, you’ll be sure to find one that suits your needs.
Single layer back carries or a reinforced hip carry will allow the
air through keeping you both cool this summer. You can use your wrap to cover
delicate skin and even as a picnic blanket for impromptu beach visits!
"Consider a wrap with a higher gsm for single layer carries, particularly if you child wants to be up and down a lot.
A higher gsm fabric will also provide more ‘cush’ for your shoulders."
Choosing the right fabric
Choosing a summer fabric comes down to two factors: the choice of yarns & the gsm, or weight of the fabric.
We love (ice) cotton, linen and bamboo for summer, and suggest something between 180 and 260gsm.
Ice cotton is an innovative yarn that,
through advanced spinning technology, makes a cool to touch and breathable fabric.
It is made with 100% Supima cotton (the finest American Pima cotton) with no synthetic fibers, and is free from harmful chemicals.
Ice cotton’s unique cooling composition makes it perfect for summer carrying.
Bamboo can be a great choice;
it offers natural UV protection and is moisture-wicking. It is soft and feels cool against your skin.
Pure bamboo wraps tend to be on the thicker side so we recommend bamboo blends or single layer carries in the heat.
At Oscha, we love linen and offer a range of choices.
It is a very popular blend for summer slings, being light and airy yet supportive.
Linen is strong and breathable and,
when combined with softer yarns, can make a great wrap for all ages.
Choose a lower linen percentage for a breathable carry perfect for smaller kids, or a higher linen percentage for
added strength and breathability: great for carrying all way through to toddlerhood.
Wool is often underrated for
hot weather and is mistakenly believed to be too warm to use. It's great at regulating body
temperatures and is naturally moisture-wicking making is perfect for carrying in the heat.
Silk is temperature regulating
and great for keeping cool this summer with its naturally breathable composition.
Many of our customers have told us they have found our
silk blends wonderful for hot weather.
100% cotton is a great all-rounder for any weather;
it is soft, strong and easy to care for.
Choosing the right carry
Choosing the right carry can be important in the heat in order to make sure you and your little one are always comfy.
Some favourite simple front carries in the heat include the Front Wrap Cross Carry (FWCC),
with un-spread cross passes (meaning a single layer is across baby), and the kangaroo carry. Other great summer carries are explained below.
Make sure any delicate skin is protected and ensure your little one is wearing a hat with
UV protection and sun cream suitable for their age. Cover exposed legs with a muslin or the tail of your sling.
Don’t forget, you can also use a parasol or sun umbrella to provide shade.
You could opt to dress your child in only a nappy and sunhat, but it will probably be more comfortable for you both
if you aren’t skin to skin for long periods in the heat. One of you can wear a layer of soft, breathable,
Some customers find it helpful to place a muslin soaked in cool water between them and their child when carrying in extreme heat.
Remember that you will both need plenty of fluids.
